Our Story
Having completed MBBS from JIPMER, Pondicherry; MD Ophthalmology from AIIMS, New Delhi; and having worked as a consultant Ophthalmologist at the Sitapur Eye Hospital in Uttar Pradesh, Dr. Chinmoy Sarkar started his humble practice in the then small town of Burdwan in West Bengal.
Practicing in private was his last option, as he was more inclined towards teaching. He had a vast teaching experience at the Asia’s premier teaching college, namely the Regional institute of Ophthalmology at Sitapur. As direct specialist recruitment in West Bengal had not started in the state, the only option then, was to apply for a job at the Public Service Commission and start one’s career at the health centre in the remote villages as a General Duty Medical Officer, treating all general patients and putting Ophthalmology in the backburner.
Micro-surgery of the eye with IOL implantation had just begun in the state. He applied and personally approached some leading centres in Kolkata, but no one was interested in providing a job. Having weighed all options at hand, he was compelled to open a small clinic in the town, named it Burdwan Eye Centre, and pioneered microsurgery of the eye in the district.
The practice of cataract surgery in those days mandated a week’s stay at the nursing home which caused a lot of inconvenience not only to the patient but also to the family members.
Microsurgery being new and competitive, he was refused to work at some nursing homes. This situation compelled him to start his own operation theatre, wherein he used to discharge the patient a few hours after surgery. He used to travel personally, at the back of his assistant Ramkrishna Das’s cycle, to the residence of the patient in the post-op period and do the dressing and necessary follow-ups. This unique method of surgery with domiciliary post-op care significantly brought down expenses incurred by the patient and reduced a lot many hassles and soon caught the attention of the people. He pioneered many new surgeries and also brought in many equipment to start treatment of glaucoma, retina, etc. This was the first time that high-tech eye care services were provided in the districts. The centre catered to patients from adjoining districts like Birbhum, Murshidabad. Bankura, Hooghly and Purulia.
He found the company of few very dedicated and hard working people, of them were Mr Ramkrishna Das (at present CEO, Nayonika Eye Care), Mrs Anima Debnath (at present Centre head Nayonika, Memari), Mrs Mridula Chandra ( at present OT incharge Nayonika Eye Care), Mr Rajkumar Roy (at present Counsellor Nayonika Eye Care), whose contribution is immense and praise worthy. In the year 2009, he founded a super-specialty state of the art eye centre and named it Nayonika Eye Care, which today boasts of multiple ophthalmologists, many from premier institutions like AIIMS and Regional Institute of Ophthalmology, Kolkata who work tirelessly in the different departments of the organization. In the year 2021, a subsidiary centre was brought into operation in the district town of Memari. Towards a social responsibility for the needy, the organization conducts regular free eye examination camps and surgeries at a nominal cost. Plans are afoot, to expand further in the future and provide services in the remote areas and also to bring in newer technologies.
Towards the end, we like to thank the numerous staff of Nayonika who have worked tirelessly to bring name and glory to the organization and we also look forward to serve the people diligently with compassion in the future, standing by our motto – An Eye for Perfection.
