A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s lens. This clouding occurs when the normally clear lens within the eye becomes opaque, similar to a foggy windshield. As the cataract grows, it can interfere with vision, causing blurry or hazy sight, sensitivity to light, and even double vision.
Causes of Cataracts:
- Aging: The most common cause of cataracts is age-related, often occurring in people over the age of 40.
- Other factors: Other factors that can contribute to cataract development include diabetes, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and certain medications.
- Injuries or surgeries: Eye injuries or previous eye surgeries can also increase the risk of cataracts.
Treatment:
The only effective treatment for cataracts is surgery. Cataract surgery is a common and highly successful procedure. During the surgery, the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL).
Cataract Surgery Procedure:
- Preparation: Before the surgery, your eye doctor will examine your eyes and discuss the procedure with you.
- Surgery: The surgery is typically performed under local anesthesia, which numbs the area around your eye. A small incision is made in the eye, and the cloudy lens is removed using a tiny ultrasound probe.
- IOL Implantation: The IOL is then implanted in the same position as the removed lens.
- Recovery: After the surgery, you will need to wear a protective eye shield for a few days. Most people experience rapid improvement in vision after cataract surgery.
Choosing the Right IOL:
There are various types of IOLs available, and your eye doctor will help you choose the one that best suits your needs and lifestyle. Factors to consider include your current prescription, your desired level of vision correction, and your overall health.
Cataract surgery is a safe and effective procedure that can significantly improve your vision. If you are experiencing symptoms of cataracts, it is important to consult with an eye doctor for evaluation and treatment.

Types of Premium Intraocular Lenses (IOLs)
There are several different kinds of premium intraocular lenses, and they all serve specific functions in improving vision. Let’s see how:
Toric IOLs
Eye doctors often recommend Toric IOLs for patients with astigmatism. People with astigmatism usually have an abnormal shape of the cornea. The cornea is essential in our vision. Together with the lens, it helps to accommodate near objects.
Toric IOLs can help patients with astigmatism because they are convex on both sides. That also means it can restore your vision without needing glasses. Note that toric lenses are monofocal, i.e., they can only correct vision at a single distance. However, since they can correct astigmatism and traditional IOLs can’t, they belong to premium intraocular lenses.
Multifocal IOLs
These types of premium IOLs correct vision at any distance. In a sense, they are the direct opposites of regular/monofocal IOLs. After getting one, you will not need glasses, contact lenses, or other visual aids.
EDoF IOLS (Extended depth of Focus)
These are IOLs that extend the focal point of the IOL and provide a range of vision. It provides good distant and intermediate vision and reduces the near-addition power required postoperatively. They provide more comfortable vision with reduced glass requirements.
The Monofocal Plus lenses provide a usable intermediate vision and a good distant vision and is a cost effective option.
